As a boy apprentice, Commander Coleman sailed three times round the Horn in the three-masted barque 'Inverlyon' of Aberdeen, and won the D.S.C. in the Royal Navy Submarine service. He retired in 1923 to become a harbour inspector with the P.L.A., which he served for 36 years till he retired again in 1959. His colleagues knew him for his imperturbable manner and his expeditious, if unorthodox, methods of handling meetings.
