CHRISTIE (Sir William Henry Mahoney, 1845-1922, Astronomer Royal 1881-1910)

Autograph Letter in the third person to  Sir William Treloar,  (1843-1923, Lord Mayor), accepting his invitation "to dinner ... to meet Old Boys of King's College School", 1 side 8vo, Royal Observatory, Greenwich, 12th April light traces of laying down on blank fourth side

Sir William built the 'Physical Observatory' ('South Building') at Greenwich 1891-1899 and equipped it with a new 28" refractor for visual use and a 26" for photographic. The latter was used to map the Sky between the North Celestial Pole and 65 deg. N declination, as part of a great international project.. His own research concerned mainly sunspot activity.
