Cowie had earlier been Professor of Geometry at Gresham College, London. He was Dean of Manchester, 1872-1883, and of Exeter 1883-1900. Canon Nathaniel Woodard, 1811-1890, was a great founder and builder of independent schools, including Lancing College, Sussex, with its magnificent chapel.
