Fenn wrote more than 170 volumes for boys embodying natural history studies, besides dramatic criticism and farces. He was editor of 'Cassell's Magazine', 1870, and proprietor of 'Once a Week', 1873.
W.H. Davenport Adams wrote 'Memorable Battles in English History', 1862, and a Concordance to Shakespeare's Plays, 1886. He also founded the 'Scottish Guardian' (editor 1870-1878) and projected and edited the 'Whitehall Library of Wit and Humour'.
