FIELD
(Admiral of the Fleet Sir Frederick Lawrence, 1871-1945)
Autograph Letter Signed to Captain Hartland Mahon,
saying he was "at the Ad[miral]ty today and the 2[nd] S[ea] L[ord] is away ill so I could not contact him ... but ... surely you can remain on ... until you hear whether you are going to get the job in the Navy League ... I couldn't write to the Chairman myself but I enclose what I sent to him through Horsey ... I am still very busy and am being pestered to speak at dinners, but as soon as I've seen H.M. the King I am going to run away and hide I want a rest very badly", 2 sides 8vo, Vernon Court Hotel, Buckingham Palace Road, S.W., 7th October
Sir Frederick commanded HMS George V at Jutland, 1916. He was 3rd Sea Lord and Controller of the Navy, 1920-1923, Deputy Chief of Naval Staff, 1925-1928, and C-in-C Mediterranean, 1928-1930. He had just returned from leading the 'Empire Cruise' of 1924, visiting the Dominions, and addressing their Governments on continuing support for Naval Defence, besides answering questions on such subjects as Imperial Preference.
For a year Mahon had worked closely with the Northern Ireland Government, especially with the Vice-Admiral of Ulster, the 3rd Marquis of Dufferin and Ava, helping to set up the Ulster division of the R.N.V.R., but had been passed over, in spite of Field's strong recommendation, for the post of Officer Instructor.
