Lord Fitzmaurice was the 2nd son of the 4th Marquess of Lansdowne. He was a Commissioner for the reorganization of the Turkish European provinces under the Treaty of Berlin, 1880, Under Secretary for Foreign Affairs, 1882-1885, and Foreign Office spokesman in the Lords, 1905-1909.
