FITZMAURICE (Edmond George, M.P., 1846-1935, from 1906 1st Baron)

Autograph Letter in the third person to Sir William Treloar, 1843-1923, Lord Mayor, and Lady Treloar, greatly regretting he must "give up the honour of accepting" their kind invitation for 28th October, "owing to a meeting of the British members of the African Sleeping [Sickness] Conference, which has been summoned for that day at 2 o'clock", 1 side 8vo, Foreign Office, 21st October

Lord Fitzmaurice was the 2nd son of the 4th Marquess of Lansdowne. He was a Commissioner for the reorganization of the Turkish European provinces under the Treaty of Berlin, 1880, Under Secretary for Foreign Affairs, 1882-1885, and Foreign Office spokesman in the Lords, 1905-1909. He was also British First Plenipotentiary to the conference mentioned in this letter, 1907-1908.
