CLERGY PENSIONS GREY (Revd. John, 1812-1895, Canon of Durham)

Autograph Letter Signed to 'My dear Sir', saying he has heard from the Bishop of Carlisle (Harvey Goodwin, the mathematician) "who does not at all like the power of withdrawing" and prefers "the specified one third", if applied everywhere the writer thinks this would be "an inducement to Patrons ... to help to make up the one third where the benefice would otherwise be too poor to afford it", 2 sides 8vo, Houghton-le-Spring, 16th March

Canon Grey was the fifth son of the Prime Minister. By the Act of 1871 (amended 1887) an incumbent provided up to one third of his stipend as pension if his predecessor was retiring.
