Downing's parents went to New England when he was 15 (his mother was Governor Winthrop's sister). He became the second graduate at Harvard, and was appointed on 27th December 1643 to teaching the junior students there. As ambassador for the Parliament in Holland he was able to make his peace with Charles II and survived in his post there. He first developed Downing Street which is called after him.
