Document in Russian with translation, bearing Nicholas' pencilled note "In red full dress and jackboots", below in another hand, in ink, is the question, "Are you asking what is to be [the rule] for officers in the evening, [to appear] in short top-coats or in red full dress ?", the latter in the right hand column, 1 side 4to, no place, no date, c.

A pencilled note in German reads "Rescript [official answer] from Tsar Nicholas I". 'Koléts' (short top-coats) were worn in certain cavalry regiments.
