Autograph Letter Signed to Evelyn, 1st wife of the historian J.E.C. Bodley, 1853-1925, explaining kindly that as consul he has "no right whatever to interfere in family matters, or in ... law and politics - France is supposed to be a civilised country" in spite of "recent events ... Consuls have none of the the powers given to them in partibus infidelium", he reassures her that her mother "could not sell if she would" and that her affairs are in good hands, she is no worse than last season, "Miss Holmes is a great success & Sybil's governess as far as I can judge", 4 sides 8vo., British Consulate General, Algiers, 30th November

Identified in Mrs. Bodley's hand on first side. Sir Lambert was nearly 30 years in Algiers, and wrote bibliographies and travel books on North Africa.
