SPALDING (William, 1809-1859, W.S., Scottish Professor of Rhetoric)

Autograph Letter Signed to the Anglo-Saxon scholar Benjamin Thorpe, F.S.A., 1782-1870, saying that "in the midst of the worry and hurry of classifying the exercises of pupils ... for the close of our winter's work" he rejoices at Thorpe's news "about the Chronicle. We shall have one at least of our most valuable monuments resuscitated worthily by worthy hands and native ones ... I ... congratulate ... all who are interested in the early history and language of the nation", and offering "my best thanks to Mrs Thorpe for her acceptable present of seeds", 2 sides 8vo., St. Andrews, 15th April

Thorpe brought out a fine edition of the Anglo-Saxon Chronicle, with several fine plates in colours, in 1861 (Rolls Series no. 23).
