PÉGON (Jean, 1589 or 1590-1675, of Langeac, from 1649 General of the Carthusian Order)

Document signed and subscribed in his attractive hand, in French with translation, to Joachim, Count of Quincé and of the Holy Roman Empire, Lieutenant General of the Camps and Armies of the King (Louis XIV) in Piedmont, granting in return for "the ancient affection that you have for our Order ... besides the share you have long had in all our exercises of devotion ... an anniversary ... in perpetuity ... on the day of your decease, for the repose of your soul", his name to be inscribed "in the Calendars of all our houses when God shall in turn call you to Himself", vellum, heading in red, gilt border, 6½" x 11¾", La Grande Chartreuse, Dauphiné (now in upper Isère), 22nd August lacks seal

In 1611 Pégon came as a postulant to the Grande Chartreuse, but Dom Bruno d'Affringues refused to admit him as neither sufficiently learned nor robust. He suggested the Chartreuse of Beaune, scarcely risen from ruin in the wars of religion, and anxious for members. Thirty eight years later Pégon, having passed through all the offices of his Order, returned as General, dying at 85, the oldest Carthusian of his time.
He is still remembered for repairing and embellishing the Church and buildings, and for the little retreat 8 foot square he built at Tenaison, where he retired for several days each year.
