SELBORNE (Maud, 1858-1950, wife of the 2nd Earl 1859-1942)

Autograph Letter Signed to her nephew Jack, enclosing "a suitable offering" for his birthday, "I suppose you are nearly at the top of Westminster school by now!", asking if Victor is staying on, and hoping to be "in England for a few weeks ... just to see Jocelyn [her son, b. 15th September 1893] settled at Winchester. What a bore education is", embossed Royal Arms in green, 2 sides 8vo., Johannesburg, Transvaal, 28th February n.y., c. neatly laid down by margin of conjugate leaf

The Countess' father was Prime Minister Lord Salisbury, and her husband High Commissioner for South Africa, 1905-1910. Jack (John, 1893-1918, M.C.) and Victor (1891-1977) were sons of her brother Lord William Gascoyne-Cecil, Rector of Hatfield and later Bishop of Exeter.
