WILLIAMS (Sir William Fenwick, 1800-1883, M.P., Defender of Kars, Governor of Nova Scotia and of Gibraltar)

Autograph Letter in the third person to Admiral and Mrs Walcott, accepting for dinner on Wednesday 8th July, 3 Devonport Street, Hyde Park, 19th June n.y., probably light traces of laying down on blank fourth side

Fenwick Williams Pasha (the first Christian to receive this title by Turkish official decree), supporting the Turks on the Caucasian front, held Kars in a remarkable seige by Count Muraviev, till compelled to capitulate on 26th November 1855. In one assault the Russians lost 7000 men. Williams was granted a pension of £1000 for life. After the Crimean War, Williams was also General-Commandant of Wooolwich Garrison, and Colonel-Commandant, Royal Artillery, 1864.
