ORFORD (George Walpole, 1723-1791, 3rd Earl)

Autograph Letter Signed to S. Hawkins at New Palace Yard, saying that he "was favor'd with your Letter and have desired Mr. Moore to settle the account forthwith with the Executors. The Idea of Interest for Long standing Debts is Inadmissable - An Attempt to Establish this Novelty was made ... a year or two Ago - & was remarkable that the Persons who Brought the Bill into the House were themselves Insolvent, and whom consequently that encouragement cou'd never have affected", 1 side folio, address on conjugate leaf, Eriswell, 12th (?) April edges, including signature, torn but complete except for part of the date, lacks top one-fifth of conjugate leaf (perhaps with note of receipt), old transparent paper at beginning of four lines without loss, lightly browned

Grandson of Sir Robert, the Prime Minister, the 3rd Earl sold the latter's collection of pictures at Houghton to Catherine the Great in 1779. As Lord Lieutenant for Norfolk he was active in the militia, and was the last of the nobility to practise hawking.
