[VICTORIA (1819-1901, Queen of Great Britain)]

Attractive and unusual unsigned photograph of her portrait by Henry Edward Dawe, (1790-1848), showing her in the royal closet at St. George's Chapel, Windsor, half length, full face, wearing a large round straw bonnet dressed with lace and feathers and tied by a full ribbon, her face framed with a chaplet of twelve roses, her crossed arms rest on the elaborately carved ledge, a prayer book in her left hand, manuscript note on present card mount 'Her Majesty in 1839', the photograph 2¾" x 1¾" oval in margins 3½" x 2¼", c. laid down

The photographer has selected the central portion of the portrait. The full version, as engraved by J. Posselwhite, is framed by the square opening of the elaborately carved closet (copy in British Museum). Not in H. & A. Gernsheim, 'Queen Victoria', 1959.
A water colour by Louisa S. Costello 'as H.M. appeared on the morning of her accession' shows her in a similar bonnet but without its lace drape and with a simpler chaplet and ribbon.
On the reverse is a photograph and signature of Spencer H. Walpole, 1806-1898, home secretary.
