SPOONER (William A., 1844-1930, Theologian & Educationalist, Originator of the 'Spoonerism')

Autograph Letter Signed to Mr Baddeley, saying that they had missed him "at the Council ... but quite understood how impossible it was for you ... We accepted Tremonger's resignation, and he has actually left. Eyre is now installed as acting Head, and I have heard from him this morning is his new capacity. I have written to Sheppard about sounding Swain, and have heard ... that Swain is unlikely to accept the headship unless it is joined with the cure of the Parish. The Council ... on Tremonger's earnest advice agreed that for the present the Head should not have the charge of the Parish ..." and he has contacted the Bishop of London who has indicated that he intends "to appoint Preston Vicar of the Parish. However, as Swain and Preston are great friends, perhaps Swain may reconsider ...", hoping that "they will take care of Tatham. He is too good material to be lost ... we in College have lost so many that we can ill spare another ...", 2 sides 8vo., New College, Oxford, 18th October
