THE FAMILY OF TSAR ALEXANDER III [ALEXANDER III (1845-1894, Emperor of Russia from 1881), his wife MARIE FEODOROVNA (Princess Marie Dagmar (1847-1928), sister of Queen Alexandra of Britain) & their children NICHOLAS II (1868-1918), GEORGE (1871-1899, Grand Duke, died of Tuberculosis), MICHAEL (1878-1918, Grand Duke), XENIA (1875-1960, Grand Duchess) & OLGA (1882-1960)]

Exceptional unsigned Russian cabinet photo showing the entire family of Alexander and Marie surrounded by their children, 6½" x 4½", no place, no date, faded

This photo was taken the year of the train disaster, in which the family were travelling in the Imperial train and it was derailed for some mysterious reason. Alexander III, who was very strong, is meant to have lifted the steel roof of the train so that his family could get out. The youngest, who is in her father's arms in this picture, (Olga), is meant to have run down the embankment, saying "Now, they've come to kill us". It is most unusual to get images of the whole family as Grand Duke George was sent to a sanitorium in 1891 for his tuberculosis, and never returned.
