[MURAT (Joachim, 1767-1815, King of Naples, Brother-in-Law & Marshal of Napoleon I)]

Fine unsigned carte de visite by E.& H.T.Anthony, showing him head and shoulders, wearing his military dress uniform, 4"x 2½", no place, no date,

Murat was Napoleon's most dashing cavalry general and married his master's sister Caroline in 1800. Napoleon made him king of Naples in 1808 where he completed the abolition of the feudal system and the introduction of French law and administration. He dreamed of ruling a united kingdom of Italy south of the Po, but though he broke with Napoleon could not get the unequivocal support of the Allies. Events led to his defeat by Austria and a disastrous landing in Calabria where he was captured, tried and shot.
