In 1893 the Russian fleet visited Toulon and in 1894, the year of Alexander III's death and Nicholas's accession, Russia and France signed a treaty of alliance. The Tsar and Tsarina were the first to visit France since the entente. It is very unusual to find her Imperial Majesty on plates and this was Nicholas's favourite image of his wife.
