THE FRENCH IMPERIAL FAMILY [NAPOLEON III (Louis Napoleon Bonaparte, 1808-1873, Emperor of the French, Nephew of Napoleon I) with his wife EUGÉNIE (née Montijo, 1826-1920) & their son LOUIS (Eugene Jean Joseph, 1856-1879, Prince Imperial, killed while out with a reconnoitring party at Ulundi, Zululand)]

Fine unsigned carte-de-visite photo by Disderi, showing the Emperor standing to the side of his wife who is sitting on a sofa with their infant son at their feet, 4" x 2½", no place, no date, c.

The young Prince trained as a soldier and was keen to see action so he successfully put pressure on the British to allow him to participate in the Anglo-Zulu war. In 1879, serving with British forces, he was killed in a skirmish with a group of Zulus. His early death sent shockwaves throughout Europe, as he was the last serious dynastic hope for the restoration of the Bonapartes to the throne of France.
