A GIFT FROM KING CHULALONGKORN [CHULALONGKORN (Rama V, 1853-1910, King of Thailand from 1868)]

Exceptional gunmetal cigarette case with impressive gold monogram on the front with a blue jewel in the gold mounted clasp on the front, 3½ inches wide by 2½ inches deep and half inch high, no place, c.

The King of Siam was strongly attracted to all things Western and was an enthusiastic customer of Faberge and other leading European Jewellers.
In autumn 2003, Dr. Henry D. Ginsburg, Siamese expert at the British Library, examined this cigarette case and confirmed that the monogram under the Siamese crown was that of Chulalongkorn. He also said that Chulalongkorn presented some cigarette boxes on his European trip in 1897, which took him as far as North Cape in Norway though it is not possible to be sure if this is one of them.
