The Howitts were originally Quakers. They married in 1821 when they published jointly "The Forest Minstrels & other Poems". From 1842-1863 Mary made the original English versions of many of Hans Christian Andersen's stories. The Howitts left the Friends in 1847 and became Spiritualists, moving to Europe in 1870, living winter and spring at Rome, summer and autumn at Dietenheim in Switzerland. They edited 'Howitt's Journal', 1847-1848.
