HOWITT
(Mary, née Botham, 1799-1888, Authoress and wife of William, 1792-1879)
Autograph Letter Signed to Mrs Suckling,
saying that she would be "happy to give you kind permission to make use of any of my little poems, which may suit his purpose, but the copyright is no longer my own. If however he will apply to Messrs Thomas Nelson & Sons ... he assuredly will obtain free permission ...", 1 side 8vo., 29th August
The Howitts were originally Quakers. They married in 1821 when they published jointly "The Forest Minstrels & other Poems". From 1842-1863 Mary made the original English versions of many of Hans Christian Andersen's stories. The Howitts left the Friends in 1847 and became Spiritualists, moving to Europe in 1870, living winter and spring at Rome, summer and autumn at Dietenheim in Switzerland. They edited 'Howitt's Journal', 1847-1848.
