[LEOPOLD (George Albert, 1853-1884, 4th Son of Queen Victoria, Duke of Albany, a haemophiliac, died after an accident on 28th March in Cannes)]

Fine unsigned cabinet photo by Hills & Saunders in Eton showing him head and shoulders during his student days, leaning on the back of a chair, 6½" x 4", no place, no date, annotated on the verso as "From the Prince to Me" in pencil, and dated 11th August slightly faded

Prince Leopold was born 7 April 1853 at Buckingham Palace. The cleverest of Victoria's sons, he managed to overcome his mother's objections and studied at Christchurch, Oxford from 1872 to 1876, leaving with an honorary DCL (Doctor of Civil Law). In 1881 he was created Duke of Albany, and the following year he married Helen of Waldeck and Pyrmont.
Prince Leopold was a haemophiliac. He died 28 March 1884 at Cannes, after falling on the tiled floor of a clubhouse.
