The couple had married on 25 January 1858 at the Chapel Royal, St. James's Palace. The bridegroom turned out to be the favourite of all Queen Victoria's sons-in-law. When he finally succeeded to the throne as Emperor Friedrich III in 1888, he was already dying of the throat cancer that was to kill him three short months later.
