[NICHOLAS II (1868-1918, Tsar of Russia from 1894, Assassinated after the Revolution), ALEXANDRA FEODOROVNA (1872-1918, the Tsarina)]

Fine Commemorative plaque commemorating their visit to France in 1896 embossed with the Imperial Eagle at the top and showing Nicholas and Alexander head and shoulders in profile, him in uniform and her in evening dress, in the lovely sage blue of the Imperial court, 11½ inches across, France,

At the time of their visit this was created for them to give to members of their court as a souvenir. It is unusual to find this plaque in such excellent condition. In 1893 the Russian fleet visited Toulon and in 1894, the year of Alexander III's death and Nicholas's accession, Russia and France signed a treaty of alliance. The Tsar and Tsarina were the first to visit France since the entente.
