PRESENTATION FROM THE KAISER TO THE EXPLORER VERNEY LOVETT CAMERON WILHELM II (1859-1941, German Emperor 1888-1918)

Superb imperial cabinet photo signed, inscribed "to the valiant Explorer Captain Cameron with many thanks for his interesting book" and dated, showing him head and shoulders, with a splendid waxed moustache, looking straight at the camera, 12" x 7" in a magnificent presentation gilt frame with Imperial crown at the head and red velvet mount, 16½" x 12", no place,

Verney Lovett CAMERON (1844-1894, English traveller in Central Africa) was the first European to cross equatorial Africa from sea to sea. He entered the Royal Navy in 1857, served in the Abyssinian campaign of 1868, and was employed for a considerable time in the suppression of the East African slave trade. He commanded an expedition. sent by the RGS in 1873, to assist Dr Livingstone. His account of his travels was published in 1877 in his book "Across Africa". He visited the Euphrates valley in 1878-1879 in connection with a proposed railway to the Persian Gulf, and accompanied Sir Richard Burton in his West African journey of 1882. At the Gold Coast Cameron surveyed the Tarkwa region, and he was joint author with Burton of "To the Gold Coast for Gold" (1883).
