[GEORGE VI (1895-1952, King of Great Britain)]

Fine chair that was designed and made for use at the Coronation, with a Limed English Oak frame, covered on the seat and back with blue velvet, which was specially commissioned for the event, with a fine embroidered "GR VI" in gilt thread with a gilt and red crown above on the back, under the seat the wood is stamped "GR VI (Crown) Coronation", Westminster Abbey, 12th May some fading of the velvet

This chair came from the Sidmouth family and would probably have been used by Gladys Mary, the wife of Raymond Anthony Addington, (1887-1976) 6th Viscount Sidmouth, as the remains of the tag appear to say "ary Sidmouth".
W. Hands and Sons Ltd., a furniture make in High Wycombe were commissioned to make the chairs for Peers and Peeresses. The blue velvet upholstery was made at Listers Mills in Bradford, Yorshire. After the ceremony those who had occupied the chairs were given the opportunity to buy them.
