Fine autograph crossed cheque with a fine signature to Robert Spencer on a blank sheet with Olding Sharpe & Co of Clements Lane, London in Tennyson's hand and the amount of twenty pounds, endorsed on the verso with stamps for the London Joint Stock Bank with Cashier's signatures, dated over the stamp on the front, 1 side oblong 8vo., Freshwater, Isle of Wight, 29th June

In a demonstration that a cheque is simply an "order to pay", Tennyson made his payment by utilising an envelope from previous correspondence to get his bankers at the London Joint Stock Bank to pay which they did as evidenced by a cashier's signature and the bank's stamp on the reverse.
