In 1912, Prince Georg Wilhelm died in a car accident in the Mark of Brandenburg. The Kaiser sent two of his sons and a cavalry unit to Gmunden to express sympathy. The return visit by Prince Ernst August the younger and Prince Max added to the rapprochement of the families, sealed in 1913 by the former's marriage to the Kaiser's daughter Viktoria Luise.
