ADELE
(Lady Charles Cavendish, 1896-1981, American dancer and entertainer)
Fine pair of vintage postcard photos, each signed, his inscribed 'Sincerely'
showing them half length, in half profile, he is wearing his usual dress suit and has a flower in his buttonhole, she is wearing a white dress, leaning back with her arm up and behind her head, each 5½" x 3½", no place, no date, but hers is annotated on the verso as from 'Lady be Good', 24th January
In 1905 Adele Astaire had a successful vaudeville act with her younger brother, Fred Astaire. After 1917 they developed it into a celebrated adult career on Broadway and, beginning in 1923, on the London stage. Adele was the bigger and more charismatic star of the two during their time performing together.
Back in New York the duo appeared in Jerome Kern's The Bunch and Judy (1922), and then the Gershwin brothers' first Broadway collaboration Lady, Be Good!, followed by their Funny Face. Both were hits in America and in London.
