Autograph Passport Document Signed "to all concerned to whom these Presents shall come ..." in his capacity as American Minister to Portugal, concerning "Captn Richard O'Brien, a citizen of the United States of America hath signified his intention of going to London & other Places on his lawful concerns. These are therefore to pray all concerned that he may be permitted to pass, without any let, hindrance or molestation, but on the contrary that all aid & assistance he shall have occasion for may be accorded to him. This passport to be in force for nine months ...", 1 side 4to., Lisbon, 22nd December 1795 with an annotation at the bottom in the hand of Samuel G. OLMSTEAD, an American Autograph Collector, together with an Autograph Letter Signed by Olmsteadgiving detais about Humphreys, it states that "General David Humphreys was born at Derby, Connecticut ... He graduated at Yale College ... He was aid to Putnam, Greene & Washington. He lived for many years on the most intimate terms in Washington's Family. He was a Poet of consideable notoriety. Was Minister to Portugal & afterwards to Spain ...", 1 side 4to., New York, 29th April 1856,

Humphreys was an American Revolutionary War colonel and aide de camp to George Washington, he was also a secretary and intelligence agent for Benjamin Franklin in Paris, American minister to Portugal and then to Spain, entrepreneur who brought Merino sheep to America and member of the Connecticut state legislature. A poet and author, he was one of the "Hartford Wits." He wrote the first sonnet known to have been written in America just about the time independence was declared.
