CASSON (Sir Hugh, 1910-1999, Architect, President of the Royal Academy)

Exceptional Illustrated Autograph letter signed to Bevis HILLIER (born 1940, Historian, Author and Journalist), with a pencil note of the date of receipt in the recipient's hand, asking if it would be "possible for me to borrow to read secretly and return promptly the scripts of the Festival Book? I am trying to concoct my own 'private' account & need my memory jerking from other sources. I'd be very grateful & naturally discreet!...", he hopes that his Connoisseur party went well with an asterisk and a note that it was a "Lovely issue", and he ends with the hope that he had misunderstood the chairman "when he said you were never to be allowed that again - NOT TRUE! ...", with an illustration of an Edwardian lady whose hat takes in the letterhead of the Royal Academy, 2 sides 4to., Royal College of Art, Piccadilly, but as from 35 Victoria Road, W8,

Hugh Casson first leapt to prominence when he was appointed Director of Architecture for the Festival of Britain at the age for 38. His ferocious energy, creative ability, commitment and the charm which he exercised on everybody connected with the 1951 Festival did more than anything guarantee its huge success. He was knighted for his efforts and remained in the public eye for the rest of his career.
