During the second World War Christian X became famous among his people as he would ride his horse daily in front of the German lines who had occupied his country to prove that the King was still there. This made him extremely popular.
They were married in the reign of his grandfather Christian IX, father of Queen Alexandra, Empress Marie, the Duchess of Cumberland, the King of Greece and Prince Valdemar. Most of these people attended his wedding. They married in Cannes on 26 April 1898; she was a daughter of Frederick Francis III, Grand Duke of Mecklenburg-Schwerin, and Grand Duchess Anastasia Mikhailovna of Russia. She eventually became his queen consort.
