MEYERBEER (Giacomo, 1791-1864, German Operatic Composer)

Fine Autograph Letter Signed in German to Moriz thanking him for lending him the orchestral score of Rossini’s opera Le Comte Ory, which helped him to translate the textbook to this opera (written in French) which he had received shortly before, he then expresses his gratitude and ends with general pleasantries, 1 side 8vo., 29th August

Meyerbeer was the most frequently performed opera composer of the 19th century. A child prodigy pianist, he went on to study opera in Italy. His innovative works combined German technique with Italian style, and from about 1817 he used ‘Giacomo’ in place of ‘Jacob’.as his first name. From 1824-1831 he was mostly in Berlin, then in Paris. His long and fruitful association with librettist Eugène Scribe, 1791-1861, began in 1827. His greatest work is ‘Les Huguenots’, 1836. In 1842 Friedrich Wilhelm IV appointed him Generalmusikdirektor in Berlin, and he divided his time between the two capitals. During his Paris years, Rossini created the comic operas Le comte Ory. The opera was written by Rossini in 1828 and premiered on August 20 in Paris.
From the collection of Dimitri TIOMKIN (1894-1979, Russian born American film music composer & conductor).
Lieber Moriz! [Signed] “Giacomo Meyerbeer
