Fine Document signed, printed with the details filled in by hand, to Commander William Sidney Smith appointing him "Commander of His Majesty's Sloop Larne ... willing and requiring you forthwith to go on board and take upon you the Charge and Command of Commander in her accordingly strictly Charging and Commanding all the Officers and Company ..." 1 side oblong folio on vellum with fine papered seal and revenue stamp, Admiralty, 24th September

William Sidney Smith was a nephew of Admiral Sir Wm. Sidney Smith, (1764-1840). He entered the Navy in 1813, as Midshipman, on board the Hibernia 120, commanded by his cousin, Capt. Chas. Thurlow Smith, as flag-ship to Sir W. S. Smith, on the Mediterranean station. He served all over the world and this appointment is for his last command during which he was employed in the North Sea and West Indies in the Larne 18, Towards the close of that period he was engaged in affording protection to the British mercantile interests on the coasts of New Grenada and Venezuela, then in a state of insurrection; and was present throughout the siege of Puerto Cahallo by General Paez.
