RICHARDS (Sir George Henry, 1820-1896, Admiral, Hydrographer to the British Admiralty)

Pair of Autograph Letters Signed to his friend ALLCHIN (Sir William Henry, 1846-1912, Physician) the first saying that he "will only now thank you for kindly writing to me on Shuter's case and we hope most earnestly to hear favourable news tomorrow. Of course I know you could not say more but what you do so gives us hope. It was a sad piece of news we got from Dickens last night ... Shuter's cheerfulness is a good symptom, of course the prospect of being relieved from such a distressing state of things to a man with a well balanced mind is very encouraging even while recognising the risks which we all know must exist ...", 3 sides 8vo., Kittery Court, 2rd August and the second thanking him for his card and saying his mind "is relieved as to Shuter ... thank you very much for your kind sympathy with us in this awful trouble ... I never knew what a terrible trial it is to lose a dear child ...", 3 sides 8vo., Atheneum headed paper, 8th October

In 1852-54 Richards served as second in command on Belcher's ship Assistancein the search for Sir John Franklin, whose Arctic expedition had been missing since 1845.
