ALBERT VICTOR'S ENGAGEMENT PHOTO [ALBERT VICTOR (Christian Edward, Duke of Clarence, 1864-1892, Eldest Son of Edward VII) & his fiancée MARY (of Teck, 1867-1953, later Queen of George V)]

Very rare unsigned cabinet photo by Gunn & Stewart showing the couple three quarters length, standing together arm in arm, he is wearing a formal jacket with a high collar and she is wearing a high necked dress with a decorated bodice, taken on the occasion of the royal couple's engagement, 6½" x 4½", no place, no date,

The wedding was fixed for 27 Feb. 1892, but on 14 Jan. 1892 the duke died of pneumonia following influenza at Sandringham.
May is wearing black which upset Queen Victoria and so another official photo had to be taken so this is a very rare image - only fifty copies were produced. She is holding her gloves so that her engagement ring is visible.
