He was designated the 14th Dalai Lama in 1937 by the monks of Lhasa, who were convinced that he was the reincarnation of the Compassionate Buddha. Enthroned at Lhasa in 1940. He fled to Chumbi in southern Tibet after an abortive anti-Chinese uprising in 1950, but negotiated an agreement with the People's Republic which allowed him to serve at nominal ruler for the next eight years. After China's brutal suppression of the Tibetan uprising of 1959 he was forced into permanent exile and settled in India.
