TENNYSON (Alfred, Lord, 1809-1892, Poet Laureate)

Autograph letter signed to MERIVALE (Rev. Charles, 1808-1893, Historian and Churchman, Dean of Ely) telling him that he is "very blind - as compared with the rest of the sons of men, not so blind yet as Homer, nor so blind but that, if you would pay me a visit, I should see my old college friend & be glad to see him, & then we might talk over your translation which has this morning come into my hand & been welcomed only less warmly than the translator would be, if he followed it ...", 2 sides 8vo., on mourning paper, Farringford, Freshwater, Isle of Wight, 1st March a few ink spots not affecting the text

Merivale went to St John's College, Cambridge in 1826. He was a member of the Apostles' Club, his fellow-members including Tennyson, A. H. Hallam, Monckton Milnes, W. H. Thompson, Trench and James Spedding. Merivale was the main protagonist on the Cambridge side in instigating the Oxford and Cambridge Boat Race held at Henley on Thames in 1829
