Albert accompanied his uncle Marshal Bazaine to Mexico in 1867 and was with him in the disaster of 1870. His cousin, Angelo Hayter (son of painter Sir George Hayter) supplied the rope with which Marshal Bazaine escaped from prison, and Albert later added Hayter to his own surname to commemorate the feat.
