HICKS (George Elgar, 1824-1914, Painter)

Fine Autograph Letter signed to W. H. ALLCHIN (Sir William Henry, 1846-1912, Physician) saying that he "will be of course speaking to any of the Academicians about the coming exhibition - your best way will be to write at once to the Secretary of the Academy who I suppose will make all the arrangements, saying that you are willing to contribute a valuable painting by Rembrandt and desiring to know when you are to send it in. This is a good opportunity of testing its originality. For the correspondence I shd not admit a doubt of its genuineness ...", 2 sides 8vo., with the address of the secretary on the blank 3rd side, 36 Kensington Park Road, 26th November

Hicks is best known for his large genre paintings, which emulate William Powell Frith in style, but he was also a society portraitist.
