Frances Eleanor TROLLOPE
(née Ternan, 1835-1913, Novelist)
End of Autograph Letter Signed "T. Adolphus Trollope" with the address and also signed by his wife
Frances with the address, Budleigh Salterton, 15th April 1890,
laid down on an album leaf with other signatures including William Flinders PETRIE
(1853-1942, Egyptologist), University Collect, 27th August 1894, 7½" x 6", no place, various dates, circa
Frances's younger sister Ellen Ternan became the mistress of Charles Dickens and because of his intercession she was recommended as a prospective governess to the child of his widowed friend Thomas Trollope, following the death of his wife Theodosia Trollope. Ternan soon married him despite an age difference of 25 years. The marriage took place within five months of her becoming a governess in Florence. They moved to Budleigh Salterton in 1890.
Flinders Petrie
held the first chair of Egyptology in the United Kingdom, and excavated many of the most important archaeological sites in Egypt in conjunction with his wife, Hilda Petrie. Some consider his most famous discovery to be that of the Merneptah Stele, an opinion with which Petrie himself concurred.
