FREDERICK LORD ROBERTS AT PRETORIA, CAPITAL OF THE SOUTH AFRICAN REPUBLIC, CAPTURED 5TH JUNE 1900 ROBERTS (Frederick, Earl, 1832-1914, V.C., 1858, K.G., 'Roberts of Kandahar', Field Marshal)

Very Fine Vintage Photograph Signed 'Roberts, F.M.' with the date, showing him full length, full face, in uniform, standing outside, no place, 2nd March

Roberts' force captured Pretoria, capital of the South African Republic, on 5TH June 1900. The Boers had decided not to defend the city and ordered a retreat along the Delagoa Bay railway line. Despite the loss of their capital, the Boers refused to surrender and Roberts had to continue the war by capturing the rest of the Transvaal and defeating the mobile Boer commandos. The Boer forces disintegrated at the end of 1900 and with the war apparently effectively over, Roberts handed over command on 12th December to Lord Kitchener. He returned to England to receive yet more honours: he was made a Knight of the Order of the Garter and also created Earl Roberts, of Kandahar. He became a Knight of Grace of the Order of St John on 11th March 1901 and then a Knight of Justice of that order on 3rd July 1901. He was among the original recipients of the Order of Merit in the 1902 Coronation Honours list published on 26th June 1902, and received the order from King Edward VII at Buckingham Palace on 8th August 1902.
This photo is also in the National Army Museum and shows his Indian orderly with him. https://collection.nam.ac.uk/detail.php?acc=1998-01-135-52
