SULLIVAN (Henry Francis, 1892-1955, American Marathon Swimmer)

Autograph Note Signed to "Colonel John Brown" sending a photo, the note says "with best wishes from Henry F. Sullivan, Swan Channel Aug. 5 & 6, 1923", together with the photograph showing him smiling and shaking hands with Colonel Brown, the photo 8½" x 6½", the card 5" x 4", with monogram at the head of the Northamptonshire Regiment, Dover Camp, 15th August

He is best known for becoming the third person and the first American to swim across the English Channel, beginning his swim on the afternoon of August 5th 1923, from Dover and finishing 27 hours and 25 minutes later on the evening of August 6th at Calais, France.
From the family of Col. John Brown. He started in the territorial army in 1901 as a Lieutenant and retired in 1941 as Director General Territorial Army – as well as running a successful architectural practice. At this time he was a Colonel and commander of the 162nd (East Midland) Infantry Brigade and following that was on the board of the British Legion of which in 1930/34 he was Chairman.
