POYNTER (Sir Edward J., 1836-1919, Painter, President of the Royal Academy)

Fine Autograph Letter Signed to Miss Kay-Shuttleworth saying he has received her letter "and ought to have replied to it long ago but I became very busy organising our Winter Exhibition which involves a good deal of correspondence & much work at the Academy - I am glad you are able to report well of the progress of the association. The money difficulty has always seemed to me a serious one as so large a sum is required to carry out the scheme. I think you will think me very remiss in not contributing, but the fact is that I am obliged to confirm my subscriptions to such small sums as I can afford in very urgent cases, as the income tax is so heavy a burden on professional men that all my spare money is absorbed in meeting its excessive demands & I must leave any donation to the association to better times if they ever come ...", 2 sides 8vo., 70 Addison Road headed paper, 5th June
