THE PRIME MINISTER ASKS LORD HILL FOR HIS SUPPORT IN THE HOUSE OF LORDS GREY (Charles, 1764-1845, 2nd Earl, Prime Minister of the Reform Bill)

Fine Autograph Letter Signed marked 'Private' as Prime Minister to General Lord Hill G.C.B. saying that he is "probably aware of the notice which has been given, by Lord Aberdeen, of a motion which he intends to make on Thursday next, with respect to my negotiations with Holland & Belgium. Such a motion can only be considered as a direct... attack on the administration, & I hope I shall not be thought to take an impossible liberty in imposing an anxious wish that your support in the House of Lords may be given to the Government on this occasion ...", 2 sides 4to., Downing Street, 24th January

Grey's term was a notable one, seeing passage of the Reform Act 1832, which finally saw the reform of the House of Commons, and the abolition of slavery throughout almost all of the British Empire in 1833 with the Slavery Abolition Act. The passing of the Reform Act was one of the most notable achievements of Grey's premiership.
General Rowland Hill, 1st Viscount Hill, GCB, GCH (1772-1842) was a British Army officer who served in the Napoleonic Wars as a brigade, division and corps commander. He became Commander-in-Chief of the British Army in 1828.
