WARREN (Sir Charles, 1840-1927, Commissioner of Police during the Ripper Trial)

Fine Autograph Letter Signed to "My dear Maunders" at the Board of Trade, telling him that the "only appointments I have to do with are those of personal staff which are follow up - and I have too many applications from old friends to give any hope to any one else should vacancies occur. I will however keep a note of your friends name & qualifications in case anything may turn up where he may be of use ..." with a postscript to send his regards to Lady Marendon, 2 sides 8vo., with original autograph envelope signed, 10 Wellington Crescent, Ramsgate, 22nd November

On the outbreak of the Second Boer War in 1899, he returned to the colours to command the 5th Division of the South African Field Force. The decision to give command to Warren was surprising. By then, Warren was 59 years old, was said to have a "disagreeable temper", had little recent experience leading troops in battle and did not get along with his superior, General Sir Redvers Buller.
He is best known as the Commissioner of the Metropolitan Police at the time of the Jack the Ripper case, and he notably failed to catch him. Warren finally had enough of criticism and resigned – coincidentally right before the murder of Mary Jane Kelly on 9th November 1888 and returned to his army career.
