SUPERB PRESENTATION PORTRAITS IN LAFAYETTE FRAMES GEORGE V (1865-1936, King of Great Britain) & his Queen MARY (of Teck, 1867-1953)

Superb Pair of fine Imperial Cabinet photographs, the one of Queen Mary by Paul Boyer, Signed and dated, the Duke of York is by Lafayette, as Duke & Duchess of Cornwall & York, showing the Duke three quarter length, in the uniform of an Admiral of the Fleet, the Duchess full length, in a long white gown with puffed shoulders, seated in a chair with her hands folded in her lap, 8” x 5½”, each mounted in an ornate gilt-composition frame and velvet border, the ebonised frames with leather backboard with gilt-tooled lettering LAFAYETTE DUBLIN, 13” x 12”, no place, dated by the Duchess

From the accession of Edward VII in January till the 9th November 1901, when the Duke was created Prince of Wales, he bore Cornwall as his first title as heir to the throne, as well as York.
Paul BOYER (1861-1952) was a French photographer born in Toulon. A student from École des Beaux-Arts (Paris), he invented the use of magnesium for the flash-lamp in photography, and got the gold medal at the Exposition Universelle of 1889. He also participated at the Moscow exhibition. He was nominated Knight of the Legion of Honor on 30th December 1891.
James LAFAYETTE (1853-1923) as a late Victorian and Edwardian portrait photographer, and managing director from 1898 to 1923 of a company in Dublin specialising in society photographs, Lafayette Ltd. In 1887, he became the first Irish photographer to be granted a royal warrant.
